Finally a FDFS!!!

Yippiee.. I have finally conquered an unconquered territory. First Day First Show of none other than the ONLY SuperStar, Rajini-starrer. And that too for a magnum opus like "Sivaji". What a milestone!!!! ;-)

Right from the day, the coup d'etat was announced by AVM studios, I wanted to watch this movie. Then, was in India and knew I wouldnt do a FDFS if I were to be in bangalore. Well its been a long time of 2 odd years and things did change for the betterment.

Last month when my roomie mentioned about advanced booking, I was taken by surprise and anger. Anger, as in the movie release had been postponing from the days of Pongal, 2007. But as our thalaivara says "kanna, naa lateaa vandaa kooda latest aaya varuvae", he has arrived with global red carpet welcome!!!

As I got to know that my roomie had bought my ticket for the first showing, I was skeptical till the end, of making it. The showing was at 8pm. And these days that is office hours. All's well that ends well. I got to enjoy the excitement of first showing right from standing in the queue to after-movie slogans.

Since we knew that the mass would be huge, we decided to attack the theatre atleast an hour before. When I say "WE", it was a gang of 15+. Of which, I knew only 2 personally before. Well, it did not take much time to mingle with each other. When we did reach the theatre, "clever" juntaa was already in. One more notable thing, I have never been part of Melbourne's Friday evening crowd. Believe me, just walking about 5-10 mins in the melbourne city streets, made me guess why my aussie colleagues leave early on friday.

As the clock started tickling towards D-hour, the decibel level outside the movie-hall increased. The slogans of "thalaivara Valzghae", "ulagattakkae Oruvanae SuperStar, rajini" etc., I knew it was only the trailer. Well, they call it "thalaivara music".

The crowd was let into the theatre after a proper security check(NO alcohols), we could only manage the front seats as the theatre wasnt that HUGE and the "clever" people had their say.

"Thalaivara Music" continued as the lights dimmed and the reels started rolling. After few rounds of advertisements and trailers, as the silverscreen showcased the "Sivaji" certificate from Censor board, the entire theatre erupts. The decibel level continues to raise as the screen showcases the lead actors name in HIS TRADEMARK style.

Just when its done, there is a dumb silence as the movie reel starts its first journey towards the screen. As they say, there is always a lull before the storm. The tempest was expected sooner than later. The whole theatre is up on its toes as thalaivar surfaces. I cannot listen anything but for the long long whistles, shouts and the crys. Yep, I was also part of it. Wonder, if I have ever screamed so much in my life till now, the amount I did in those 3 hours. Still feeling my vocal chords.

The movie continues in its own pace, but the theatre decibel level never grounds to level zero. Every frame of HIS, is punctuated with fanaticism to the core. I was only enjoying being part of the feast.

Just when I could properly reciprocate to tamil words, a bunch of people are queueing on the periphery of the theatre interiors. Yep, you guessed it right, "thalaivara train". My adjoining juntaa pulled me to be one of the compartment and I obliged. The train started moving on the rail-less route. Believe me, the train did have female bogies. Just when it had moved for a couple of minutes, there was no further movement. "Thalaivara train" was in state of deadlock. One of the smart bogies derailed into the theatre midway aisle breaking the deadlock state and the feast continued. All this, during the movie-screening.

As the train dispersed after few minutes, there was an interval during which juntaa enjoyed movie-watching. Comical scenes were laughed out, punch-dialogues were celebrated, overall it came to a state of "movie-watching".

This state continued till Intermission, as there was not much of Rajini magic. After Intermission, the celebreation levels reached its crescendo. There were many shots were Rajni was abused/beaten up/squashed and he even "dies". If it was any other movies, juntaa would keep mum till the lead took charge. But here, it was a different story altogether. Just a few snippets of overheard hues and crys :

*translated to english, as my tamil comprehension is poor*

"Dog..you will not go out of Tamilnadu if you come there"

"Will you have hands tomorrow??"

"Thalaivara HIT him back.. we cannot see you being beaten up"

And when thalai "dies" - "thalai take my life... come back to life"

Huhh.. way to much fanaticism. Moreso, in a place away from HIS forte. Have seen "Stalin" with chiranjeevi-frenzy fans, but this was truly miles apart.

I am just not able to articulate completely my fantastic experience here. After the movie ended, I had missed watching the movie as a result of being part of the phenomenon. So pakku decides to watch the movie again.

When you have friends network- which boasts of the distributor(for australia) himself, tickets for saturday noon show was not a dream anymore.

Pakku shall try to dissect "Sivaji" next up after the second showing..

kanasalli barthini, ottigae maathadonaa :-)

This territory of mine has witnessed many posts scribbled about South-indian movies. But, none of them featured about a kannada movie. Finally, yep finally, I made it to a theatre in melbourne. No brownie points for guessing the movie. Its, Mungaru Male :-)

All my dreams of doing an Aamir-Preity "Dil Chahtha Hai" just drained away into kalasipalya morii ;-) as I was escorted by my dost.

For a while, I was elated to see such a huge gathering of kannada-speaking people at one place. Moreso, was very pleased to hear all those "enrii.. hegidderaa", "paapu..cheenagi iddiya".."bengaloorigae yaavaga hogtha iddira"..and so on. Later on, as the mass gathered in no time, it was complete hara-kiri.

If one side of my ears overheard "nan magaligae exams ide antha manelli bittu bande ree".. the other voice in a different direction echoed "nan maga nandini manegae study maadakkae hogiddane". I was so confused if the female in the context were the same. *One tight slap for all the pervert thoughts in your mind*

After all the "Melbourne Kannada Sangha" office-bearers yelling "Come.. join us and make a difference" (pakku contemplates- join relates to Sum, why the fella was growling difference) the show finally began. The theatre was not a huge one, but it was fully packed.

Even before the movie started rolling, the cry of infants from different directions added to the melodramatic fervour in theatre. No, I seriously dont love crying kids. I adore only cutie pies playing and smiling with their chubby chubby face.
Truly, I started watching movies in theatres after 2003 (yep.. last 3 years only. nanna nambi naannna nambi please). Till date, I have watched only one kannada movie(Jogi) twice. Since the movie was "macchu-longuu" kinds, there were lot of "Jai-Jai" in the movie hall.

Just when the movie screened "Ganesh" as the lead male actor-someone yelled "Namaskaara, Namaskaara, Namaskaara" with a "Comedy Time" accent. Theatre erupts. Watta timing!!! Pakku was so delighted that he was in for a pleasant movie showing after a long working week and more so in melbourne. Its very aptly said that, one feels more about his own people away from the home soil. How true!!

The only agitating point about the showing was bunch of kannada-auntys(;-)) sitting behind us. Whenever the female lead portrayed herself in a revealing(believe me- her dressing sense pretty good allthrough the movie) attire, comments like "en avataara idu.. onchooru sarilla paa", "seerae utkoloo parina idu". Believe me, it was so irritating. And above that conversations of their sisters_in-laws_dads_friend being a relative of Ganesh and so on made me feel like yelling at them. After a gasp, pakku pacifies himself as, movie-watching in foreign land is more of get-together, know-how's than enjoying the movie.

Amidst dialogues being punctuated with waah-waahs, long longgg whistles, it was quite an experience first up. And about the movie, no, I am not writing anything more. My verdict - "Go watch it umpteen times for the first 2 hours"

Finally, when the wonderful showing signed-off with a "Preethi madhura.. Thyaaga amara" scribble, pakku could only comment the moral of the story to his pal as "maga.. modlu hudgii engagement aagidiya illva antha nodbittu love maadbeku allvaa!!". The moment I closed my mouth, certain section of the crowd was eyeing me as though I was there for a female-hunt and started making physical movements to hide their females' face(jusst kiding!!).

Grrrrrr... janarigae sense of humor annodae illa :-)
